MATRA 650 – 24H LE MANS 1969
Pilotos.: Nanni Galli & Robin Widdows
After the popular enthusiasm of 1968, Matra Sport decided to speed up its programme and aim for victory at Le Mans a year in advance. While waiting for the new 650 “spider”, it was decided to adapt the 630 to the 1969 regulations: it would be the 630-650. Two cars of this form were entered at Le Mans in 1969, numbers 34 and 35, although designated on their sides as MS 650.
The number 35 is the result of the modification of the number 30 of 1967. It is the only one fitted with Koni shock absorbers. Like the number 34, it is fitted with 6-spoke wheels and a short rear bonnet and the exhausts are integrated into the rear diffuser to give it a Venturi effect.
If the race for the front is developing rapidly between Porsche and Ford, the battle for the top positions is tough and Matra is not unworthy of this game. Of the 4 cars entered, three are classified 4th, 5th and 7th (#35).
